The flight from Houston to LA went great. Bryson is a professional flyer now and even got his own seat both ways. I guess this should have been my cue that since all the flights were on time and extra room on the planes that the trip itself was in for problems. The last couple of trips we have had a awful time with delays and getting where we are going to on time but have had wonderful trips.
We arrived in LA and got to our hotel with no problems. We woke up the next morning for Bryson's appointment and enjoyed the view from our hotel. Everything with his doctor's appointment and MRI went well and without a hitch. They did have him under just little longer than they had anticipated because they were able to get a few more specialized pictures and did tell us they had to suck a little mucus from him when they were waking him up.
We returned to our hotel room and planned for a relaxing night and allow Bryson to recover from the day and get ready to be a tourist in California for the next couple of days. Well, around 8pm (3 hours after we left UCLA) Bryson seemed to slow down a little from playing. We figured he was tired and gave him a bath and got him ready for bed. Kristi noticed Bryson was shivering after the bath and figured he was just cold so she got him bundled up in his pajamas and a blanket. After watching him for the next few minutes he did not seem right to us and we decided to check his temperature even though he didn't really feel warm. It STARTED at 102 degrees and proceeded to climb to 104!! So Kristi went into panicked mom mode and we immediately tried to get some medicine into him to help the fever. Of course Bryson proceeds to throw it up 5 secs later. We were then left with no other option but to grab stuff and head down to our rental car stopping only briefly by the front desk to find out were the nearest Emergency Room was.
We proceed at a fast pace through a foreign city in the dark for an Emergency Room that is supposedly only 3 miles away. Luckily, a very nice lady at a red light said she would show us the way and personally drove to the hospital with us in tow. Kristi took Bryson in immediately while I parked the car (what felt like 5 miles away). By the time I got in there they had given Bryson more medicine and were taking his temp which was now at 105 degrees. By the way, we ended up at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. You know the one where Britney Spears went and all other famous people go. Well Bryson proceeds to throw up all their meds as well. So we are left for about 45 mins in the room with a now naked Bryson and crying Bryson (kept wiping him with cool rags). After which time they were able to get a suppository ordered and into him to get the fever down. They also wanted an IV started so they could get fluids and antibiotic for the infection in him. An infection they believe they are seeing in his lungs from a chest x-ray they take. This would have been no problem except you have to practically starve and dehydrate your kid for the MRI and Bryson had not had time to recover from that yet. So there was no way to get an IV started even though it didn't stop them from trying! Did I mention that Bryson is not happy with the situation. I can't blame him though because they have attempted an IV at least 10 times with the last attempts coming from the NICU nurse they called down. He wants to be asleep and all they keep doing is waking him up for more IV attempts. At that point he had a pretty steady cry.
Luckily, we got a good ER doctor and he knew when to call the battle. When the suppository kicked in and got his temp down to 101 and Bryson was able to nurse with Kristi and keep it down, he was more receptive to giving Bryson a shot of antibiotic and not trying to admit him to the hospital. He gave us some suppositories to take with us and a prescription for an antibiotic and the advice we see our pedi as soon as we got back since it was only in a few days. We definitely had mutual feelings there.
And to keep this from being much longer. We got the medicine which Bryson refused to take. If we did get it down, even mixed with food, he would throw it up. So after fighting it Friday all day and starting Saturday out the same way, Kristi raised the white flag and asked "Can't we just go home"...I called Continental and told them to get us home now!!!!!!! Once we got back to Houston we were able to get a better prescription where we have had no more trouble getting him to take as well as all the comforts of home. Come to find out the fever and blurriness they saw on the chest x-ray where both just due to the anesthesia he had received. The sickness was probably a case of sinus infection everyone is getting but got brought on faster by him being dehydrated , giving blood and traveling.
Lessons Learned:
We did not know but they sell suppositories over the counter and we now have a box with us all the time! So if we do run into trouble we should be able to at least get his temperature down to a manageable level even if his tummy is not wanting to keep anything down.
We only have a few pics from the trip. This is the view from our room towards the Pacific in the distances.
Friday night we did go ahead and get Bryson ready for bed and loaded him up in the car seat and let him sleep while we drove around and did a self guided tour of the area. We drove down Hollywood Blvd all the way to where they had it blocked off for the red carpet stuff. I parked around the corner and stayed with Bryson while Kristi went up and looked around. She brought back some pictures from the area. She did like getting to see all that in person and then Sunday watch it from home and see all the same stuff from the TV perspective.
And of course here is our little man checking out the super comfortable hotel bed when we first got there, before all the craziness started!
